Vitamin “M” Improves Insomnia Symptoms in 8 Weeks
Some things are overrated… good sleep is NOT one of them.
Good sleep is necessary for everything from brain function to immunity and even mood.
And NOT getting adequate rest boosts your risk of mental health disorders, heart disease, diabetes, and more.
Whenever one of my patients is struggling with sleep problems, my number one recommendation is to fix their environment.
That involves good sleep hygiene practices like sleeping in a dark room, going to bed at a routine time, and not eating late at night.
Beyond that, I’ve found one nutrient that consistently helps combat symptoms of insomnia, helping people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
It’s starts with an “M,” but it’s not melatonin… it’s magnesium.
A deficiency in magnesium has a negative impact on sleep, while boosting magnesium levels can have major benefits for adults suffering from insomnia.
In a study of older adults with insomnia, taking magnesium supplements for eight weeks led to the following improvements:
- They fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer.
- They spent more time in bed actually asleep.
- It reduced early morning waking.
- It increased concentrations of melatonin (the sleep hormone).
- It decreased concentrations of serotonin (the stress hormone).
Magnesium is one nutrient you don’t want to be deficient in when it comes to getting quality sleep.
The only problem?
About 43 percent of US adults don’t get enough magnesium in their diets… adding up to 100 million people who are deficient in this critical mineral.
If you want to make sure you’re not one of them, you can boost your magnesium levels—and boost the quality of your sleep in the process—by consuming foods like dark, leafy greens, whole grains, beans, and pumpkin seeds.
For additional support, add in a quality magnesium supplement.
P.S. A recent study was the first major study to investigate the effect of different types of exercise on sleep. Click here to read about it.
