6 Drug-Free Ways to Tackle Anxiety
Anxiety is a nasty weight to carry around.
It can be crippling to those who experience it.
The restlessness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, overwhelming sense of worry, sleeplessness, and physical pain that occur can impact relationships, work, and everything in between.
But what’s worse is that many of Big Pharma’s so-called solutions for anxiety can lead to awful side effects and chemical dependency. (Talk about anxiety-inducing!)
Luckily, there are safer alternatives that actually work. Here are six of the best:
- Omega-3s
These healthy fats are good for your body, brain, and emotions.
Studies show that taking omega-3s reduced symptoms of anxiety by 20 percent in people facing stressful situations.
- Ashwagandha
This ancient healing herb is well known for its stress-busting powers. It essentially works by helping your body respond better to stress.
Taking a daily dose of ashwagandha has been shown to significantly reduce anxiety. Research also shows the herb reduces levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.
- Chamomile
If you’ve ever had chamomile tea in the evenings to relax, you’ve already experienced its calming effects.
In one study, taking a chamomile extract for 8 weeks led to significant and “clinically meaningful” reductions in general anxiety disorder.
- Lavender
Lavender’s ability to trigger relaxation has launched this sweet-smelling flower into the mainstream. But if you want to get the most from its benefits, skip the cosmetics and lotions.
Instead, use lavender essential oil in a diffuser. The diffused oil has been shown to be as effective as lorazepam and paroxetine (two popular anxiety drugs).
- Echinacea
This herb is best known for its ability to fight cold and flu. However, research shows that echinacea also has anti-anxiety effects.
In fact, a lab study found that its potential for relieving anxiety was as good as the benzodiazepine drug chlordiazepoxide.
- Valerian
Valerian is typically thought of as a sleep aid, but studies show it could also be a remedy for anxiety.
In a study that used EEG to measure, taking valerian three times per day was shown to have a positive, anxiety-reducing impact on brain activity.
- Bonus
One last thought. This solution isn’t an herb or supplement, but it has helped me during the most stressful, anxiety-producing times of my life. And that has been keeping a gratitude journal.
The idea is simple: Write down the things you’re thankful for in your life.
It might sound like a small thing, but for me personally, it has made a huge difference.
P.S. A study earlier this year revealed a surprisingly effective natural drink to lower the risk of anxiety and depression. In fact, researchers say it even PROMOTES feelings of happiness. Click here for all the details.
