Is Your Blood Sugar DESTROYING Your Brain?
Most of us worry about keeping our brain strong and healthy as we age.
Because let’s face it, no one wants to be subject to forgetfulness, cognitive decline, or even the life-altering Alzheimer’s disease.
Many things contribute to your brain health – from diet and exercise, to other preexisting conditions.
And now researchers have discovered how your blood sugar could be DESTROYING your brain…
Even if you DON’T have diabetes.
Here’s what you need to know.
If you have slightly elevated blood sugar levels, you might think there’s nothing to worry about – at least not yet.
You’ll want to think again.
It turns out that even slightly elevated glucose can wreak havoc on your body—especially your brain.
Researchers analyzed data on 500,000 people averaging 58 years old. All of these individuals took an HbA1C test at the start of the study, which measures average blood sugar levels over three months.
The people were then divided into five groups according to blood sugar levels: low-normal, normal, prediabetes, undiagnosed diabetes, and diabetes.
The study showed that people with above average blood sugar levels were:
- 42 percent more likely to experience cognitive decline over four years, and
- 54 percent more likely to develop vascular dementia over eight years.
In fact, there were similar rates of cognitive decline between people with prediabetes (42 percent) and those with diabetes (39 percent).
Doctors have known for years that having diabetes increases your risk of dementia. And in fact, this study confirmed that diabetics are three times more likely to develop vascular dementia.
But this study highlighted that any blood sugar level above normal is bad for your brain—and doctors should be warning their patients.
It’s not enough just to NOT have diabetes.
For optimal health, you blood sugar levels need to be optimal as well.
That means keeping them under 42 mmol/mol.
P.S. Whether or not you have elevated blood sugar, there are other things you can do to help protect your brain and keep it STRONG. You can start by making sure you get these four nutrients. Click here for the details.
