Is Your Brain SHRINKING?!
You probably already know that muscles often start to shrivel as you get older.
Your skin tends to do that, too.
But did you know the same thing can happen to your brain?
And that’s a BIG problem.
Because the smaller your brain gets, the bigger your problems with cognitive function… and the greater your risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Even scarier?
Nearly 50 percent of the population have a HIDDEN risk factor associated with a DROP in brain volume.
Researchers recruited 172 people 55 and older with no signs of cognitive decline.
At the beginning of the study, and again four years later, they assessed their brain volume using an MRI.
They also measured gum disease and tooth loss.
At the end of the study, they found that gum disease and tooth loss were associated with reduced brain volume.
The hippocampus, an area involved in learning and memory, was particularly affected.
Even in those without severe gum disease, having fewer teeth was linked to a loss of volume.
Ultimately, having severe gum disease was the equivalent of 1.3 years of brain aging.
And for each additional lost tooth, the amount of brain shrinkage was the equivalent of about ONE MORE year of brain aging.
In other words, having poor oral health is like pressing the accelerator on your brain’s age.
When your brain shrinks, so does its power and function. A decrease in brain volume can lead to cognitive impairments like memory loss and difficulties with spatial navigation.
You can’t control every Alzheimer’s risk factor, of course. But taking good care of your oral health IS something you can do.
