5 Supplements to LOWER Your Blood Sugar
You don’t have to have type 2 diabetes for your blood sugar to be wreaking havoc on your body.
In fact, studies have shown that even before you reach the prediabetes threshold, high blood sugar levels could already be causing irreparable damage.
That means that the time to manage your blood sugar levels is NOW.
Two primary ways to do that are through diet and minding your circadian rhythm.
But if you want some additional help along the way, these 5 supplements have all shown to help lower blood sugar, alleviate insulin resistance, and lower the rate of your body’s sugar absorption.
And, like I said, they’re something you should consider even if you don’t have type 2 diabetes.
High blood start wreaking havoc on your body long before your levels are high enough to be labeled as a diabetic — or even prediabetic, for that matter.
Prediabetes is defined as a fasting blood sugar between 100-125 mg/dL.
But studies clearly show that your fasting blood glucose has to be 85 mg/dL or less to prevent damage to your tissues.
If you don’t know your levels, have them tested.
Your goal should be for 85 mg/dL or LESS.
Here are 5 key supplements to help you get (or stay) in the safe zone.
Cinnamon
In one study, people with prediabetes took 500 mg of cinnamon or a placebo three times a day for 12 weeks.
Those taking the cinnamon had lower fasting blood sugar levels, and improved ability to metabolize sugar.
In another study, people taking cinnamon for three months experienced an 8.4 percent decrease in fasting blood sugar levels.
Vitamin D
Yes, the sunshine vitamin can help with your blood sugar, too.
Vitamin D has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, lower glucose levels, and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Both supplements and sun exposures were shown to improve blood glucose levels.
Magnesium
Magnesium has many roles in your body—including helping to regulate your blood sugar.
People who consume more magnesium tend to have a lower risk of diabetes.
And taking oral magnesium supplements was shown to reduce the resistance to insulin and improve glycemic regulation in people with type 2 diabetes.
Gymnema
You might not be familiar with this one, but it’s been used in Ayurvedic medicine for ages.
The neat feature of this plant is that it not only slows your body’s rate of sugar absorption… it reduces your cravings for sugar.
Numerous studies have shown that taking gymnema every day for three months reduces fasting blood sugar levels, after-meal blood sugar levels, and the rate of sugar absorption.
Berberine
Berberine is impressive because some studies have indicated that it’s at least as effective as traditional treatment options at helping regulate your blood glucose.
In a study of 80 people who were hospitalized for metabolic syndrome, half received traditional therapies and drugs, while the other half received a berberine-based therapy.
The patients in the berberine group effectively regulated their blood glucose and lipids, alleviated insulin resistance, and reduced levels of inflammation.
Another study concluded that berberine might be a good alternative to traditional medicine.
