Never Get Another Summer Cold
Earlier this week, I told you how to boost vitamin D levels with one of my favorite foods: eggs.
In case you missed it, here’s the short version: If you can’t spend enough time outdoors to maintain adequate vitamin D, eating an egg a day can fill in the gap.
Vitamin D has many benefits. But one of the most important reasons for maintaining adequate D levels is that the vitamin is essential for a robust immune response.
Today, I want to tell you about another food that provides vital vitamin D (plus other key nutrients), leading to impressive immune-boosting results.
Just half a filet of wild-caught salmon contains 815 IUs of vitamin D.
That’s more than the US’s Recommended Daily Allowance (although I’d recommend getting closer to 1,000 or better).
A deficiency in vitamin D increases your susceptibility to infections… including COVID-19.
So if you’re not spending enough time outdoors to get all the D you need from the sun, you’ll definitely want to eat more salmon.
In addition, salmon provides plenty of vitamin B6. B6 supports healthy chemical reactions in your immune system, helping your body guard against infections. In fact, fatty fish like salmon have one of the highest concentrations of vitamin B6 of any food.
Salmon is also a fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids. You’re likely familiar with their heart and brain benefits, but omega-3s are a boon for your immune system, too.
The potent fatty acids help build and maintain cell membranes. Plus, omega-3s reduce inflammation while increasing your body’s ability to fight illness.
Wild salmon is an excellent source of magnesium as well. In addition to reducing inflammation, magnesium is essential for solid immune health, contributing to immune cell development and activation.
Salmon is also rich in oxidative stress reducing selenium. The mineral supports the overall immune system and reduces the risk of infections.
The bottom line?
Wild-caught salmon contains a well-rounded blend of nutrients, making it the perfect choice for supporting a healthy immune system and fighting all kinds of infections. Eat it as often as possible!
